Lesson from a Book Seller

It was late evening after day’s work. This was pre Youtube, Twitter or even Gmail days and back then I developed interest in Linux and I used to buy magazines from magazine stalls. The ones that are outside of railway stations or big crossings.

So, I selected couple of magazines to buy. While I was paying for them, I realized I don’t have enough cash on me and started putting some of them back.

What happened, you don’t want them- the vendor asked

No, may be next time, I don’t have enough cash – I said.

He said it’s fine! you can take them and pay me the next time you visit.

Surprise by his answer- I asked why? Because, I wasn’t his regular customer and he didn’t know me.

I’m sure you’ll pay me back. People who read books/magazines wouldn’t read them without paying for it. I have full faith in people who read, I even just cover my stall and don’t put any lock when I go home, those who read won’t steal and those who’ll steal- it’s not worth their time.

I’m pretty sure he must have been an avid reader himself and understood books and what he said made complete sense.

I was sold!
